(Gotha: Justus Perthes, 1881)

An article in Dr. Augustus Petermann's 'Mittheilungen' of May 19, 1881: the entire issue of the journal is supplied, though the article relating to East Griqualand and Pondoland is confined to pp. 211-213, with an accompanying map in colours. 278 x 230 mm; printed wrappers; pp. [201-240] + adverts.; 2 maps: that of Pondoland and East Griquland from Henkel and other sources, and that of the Blunts' travels in northern Arabia showing comparative routes by Burton, Doughty and others. Occasional fox spot. Very good condition. German text. The area formerly known as Nomansland became East Griqualand after the Griqua Khoikhoi people, under the leadership of Adam Kok III, trekked there in 1861. The territory was annexed by the government of the Cape Colony in 1874. Caesar Carl Hans Henkel (1839-1913) "was the son of Carl Henkel, an officer and later Comptroller-in-Chief of the Hessian Army." After involvement in the Crimean War as a lieutenant in the British-German Legion, Henkel "was appointed secretary to the commanding officer, Baron R. von Stutterheim, and was concerned with the settlement of German missionaries in the vicinity of King William's Town." Henkel participated in suppressing the Indian Mutiny. He returned to the Eastern Cape, but became bored with military life, and sought stimulating work. "An opportunity occurred in 1875 when he obtained a permanent appointment in the office of the surveyor-general and then trained as a surveyor. He travelled all over the country for eight years as a member of the C.P. Watermeyer Commission to make cartographic surveys ... After completing an excellent map of the Transkei area he was transferred to the forestry department at his own request ... The yellowwood tree in East Griqualand, Podocarpus henkelii, is named after him." - DSAB IV, pp. 230-1.
